- Shui Wakashu
Hitori nuru yado ni wa tsuki no miezaraba koishiki koto no kazu wa masaraji
If the moon could not be seen at the house where I sleep alone, the things that make me long for you would not grow in number.
Shui Wakashu - Minamoto no Shitagō
Nagatsuki no ariake no tsuki no aritsutsu mo kimi shi kimasaba ware koime ya mo
If you kept coming to me, unchanging like the dawn moon of the Ninth Month, would I long for you so? Surely not.
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
Koto naraba yami ni zo aramashi aki no yo no nazo tsukikage no hitodanome naru
Since it is all the same, I wish it had been a dark night; why does the moonlight of an autumn night only raise my hopes?
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
Furanu yo no kokoro o shirade ōzora no ame o tsurashi to omoikeru kana
Not knowing the heart of one who stays away even on nights without rain, how I resented the rain falling from the wide sky.
Shui Wakashu - Tōgū no Sakon
Once even a robe lying between us felt like a barrier; now even nights without meeting have come between us.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Even a long night, when I spend it resenting that cruel person, turns to dawn before I have slept at all.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Wasurenan ima wa towaji to omoitsutsu nuru yo shimo koso yume ni miekere
On the very nights I go to sleep thinking, "I will forget you, I will not visit you anymore," you appear to me in my dreams.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Yoru tote mo nerarezarikeri hito shirezu nezame no koi ni odorokaretsutsu
Even at night I could not sleep, startled awake again and again, unknown to anyone, by the longing that comes when I wake.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Is the black hair of my beloved spreading loose again tonight across the bed where I am not beside her?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Waga seko ga arika mo shirade netaru yo wa akatsukigata no makura sabishi mo
On nights when I fall asleep not even knowing where my husband is, how lonely my pillow feels toward dawn.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Ika narishi toki kuretake no hitoyo dani itazurabushi o kurushi to iuran
At what time was it, I wonder, that I once complained that even a single night, short as a joint of bamboo, spent lying alone in vain was painful to bear?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
On what occasion, I wonder, will I meet at night the one I long for, as bamboo meets its joints?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Masashi chō yaso no chimata ni yūke tou ura masa ni seyo imo ni aubeku
At the crossroads where eighty roads divide, where the evening oracle is said to be true, I seek my fortune; O oracle, prove true, so that I may meet my beloved.
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
Yūke tou ura ni mo yoku ari koyoi dani kozaramu kimi o itsu ka matsubeki
I asked the evening oracle and it came out well; if you do not come even tonight, when am I ever to wait for you?
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
If only in dreams, I wish that somehow we might see each other; I will make it a comfort for the nights I sleep without meeting you.
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
Utsutsu ni wa au koto katashi tama no o no yoru wa taesezu yume ni mienan
In waking life it is so hard to meet; like a string of jewels twisted unbroken, may you appear in my dreams every night without fail.
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
