Book Thirteen Love Poems III 801
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that even at night one could not sleep, startled awake again and again, unknown to anyone, by the longing that comes on waking. It sings of the pain of a heart troubled by love by night as well as by day, passing sleepless hours without anyone knowing.
First line, "yoru tote mo," means "even though it is night."
Second line, "nerarezarikeri," means "I could not sleep," with "re" the irrealis form of the potential auxiliary "ru" and "keri" an exclamation of realization, with a caesura here. Where the preceding poem, 800, sings of dreaming on nights one sleeps, this poem says one cannot sleep at all, forming a pair.
Third line, "hito shirezu," means "unknown to anyone."
Fourth line, "nezame no koi ni," means "by the longing upon waking in the night."
Final line, "odorokaretsutsu," means "startled awake again and again," with "re" the continuative form of the spontaneous auxiliary "ru" and "tsutsu" marking repetition. By inversion it turns back to the second line.
