- Shin Kokin Wakashu
Koromogawa minareshi hito no wakare ni wa tamoto made koso nami wa tachikere
At parting from one I have known so long, as a robe grows used to the waters of Robe River, the waves of my tears rise even to the folds of my sleeves.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Minamoto no Shigeyuki
Yukusue ni abukumagawa no nakariseba ika ni ka semashi kyō no wakare o
If the Abukuma, whose name speaks of meeting, did not lie ahead on my way, how could I bear this parting today?

Even if the coolness of the pine groves of Iki, where you are going, surpasses it, do not forget the breeze of this fan I send along with you.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kenshi
Kaminazuki mare no miyuki ni sasowarete kyō wakarenaba itsu ka aimimu
Drawn along on this rare royal progress in the Godless Month, if we part from each other today, when shall we ever meet again?

I hear that China, too, lies beneath the same heaven. Yet I pray you will not forget this land of the rising sun, beneath the sun that shines on us.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Mother of Ajari Jōjin
Wakareji wa kore ya kagiri no tabi naramu sara ni ikubeki kokochi koso sene
On this road of parting, will this journey be my last? I cannot feel at all that I could go any further.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Dōmyō
Amanogawa sora ni kienishi funade ni wa ware zo masarite kesa wa kanashiki
More than the parting of the boat that vanished into the sky across the River of Heaven, it is I whose sorrow is the greater this morning.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kaga no Saemon
Wakareji wa itsu mo nageki no taesenu ni itodo kanashiki aki no yūgure
The road of parting is never free of sighs, yet this autumn evening makes it sadder still.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Takaie
Todomaramu koto wa kokoro ni kanaedomo ika ni ka semashi aki no sasou o
To stay here would be what my heart desires, yet what can I do when autumn beckons me away?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Sanekata
Miyako o ba aki to tomo ni zo tachisomeshi yodo no kawagiri iku yo hedatetsu
I set out from the capital just as autumn arrived. For how many nights now have the river mists of Yodo stood between the capital and me?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Oe no Masafusa
Omoiideba onaji sora to wa tsuki o miyo hodo wa kumoi ni meguriau made
When you remember me, gaze at the moon and know we share the same sky. Though the distance between us is as far as the clouds, keep looking until, like the circling moon, we come around to meet again.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Emperor Go-Sanjō
Kaerikomu hodo omou ni mo takekuma no matsu waga mi koso itaku oinure
When I think of how long it will be until you return, it is I, waiting like the pine of Takekuma, who have grown so very old.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Mototoshi
Omoedomo sadame naki yo no hakanasa ni itsu o mate to mo e koso tanomene
Though I think of you, in the frailty of this uncertain world I cannot give you any promise of when to wait for me.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Gyōson
Chigiri oku koto koso sara ni nakarishika kanete omoishi wakare naraneba
We made no promise at all to meet again, for this was not a parting I had foreseen.
