Kono yo nite nagamerareneru tsuki nareba mayowan yami mo terasazarame ya
Since it is the moon I have gazed at all my life in this world, how could it fail to light even the darkness where I may lose my way hereafter?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Akikaze no koto ni mi ni shimu koyoi kana tsuki sae sumeru niwa no keshiki ni
Tonight the autumn wind sinks into me all the more, carried on the sound of the koto, for even the moon dwells clear upon the garden's scene.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sumu hito no kokoro kumaruru izumi kana mukashi o ika ni omoiizuran
As I draw from this clear spring, I find myself drawing out the heart of the one who lives here. How, I wonder, does he recall the days of old?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ima yori wa mukashigatari wa kokoro sen ayashiki made ni sode shiore keri
From now on I will be careful about talking of the old days, for my sleeves, to a degree that surprises even me, have been soaked through with tears.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nare kinishi miyako mo utoku narihatete kanashisa souru aki no kure kana
Even the capital I once knew so well has grown wholly distant, and it only adds to the sorrow of this autumn's ending.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kimi inaba tsuki matsu tote mo nagameyaran azuma no kata no yūgure no sora
Once you have gone, even when I tell myself I am only waiting for the moon, I will be gazing far toward the evening sky in the east.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ōhara ya mada sumigama mo narawazu to iiken hito o ima araseba ya
How I wish he were here now, the man who once said that at Ōhara he was not yet used even to the charcoal kilns.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ima da ni mo kakari to iishi takitsuse no sono ori made wa mukashi narikemu
The rushing falls of which it was once said, "even now it is like this"—up to that time, I suppose, they still kept the look of long ago.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Magiretsuru mado no arashi no koe tomete fukuru o tsuguru mizu no oto kana
As the storm at my window, which had drowned it out, falls silent, there comes the sound of water telling me the night has grown late.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tama migaku tsuyu zo makura ni chirikakaru yume odorokasu take no arashi ni
Dew like polished jewels comes scattering onto my pillow, shaken down by the storm in the bamboo that has startled me out of my dreams.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mine orosu matsu no arashi no oto ni mata hibiki o souru iriai no kane
To the sound of the storm sweeping down from the peak through the pines, the evening temple bell adds its own echo.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yūsare ya hibara no mine o koeyukeba sugoku kikoyuru yamabato no koe
Evening falls. As I cross the peak thick with cypress, the call of a mountain dove sounds chillingly lonely.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nami chikaki iso no matsugane makura nite uraganashiki wa koyoi nomi ka wa
Pillowed on the roots of a pine by the rocky shore where the waves come close, is it only tonight that my heart feels so sad? No, it is so every night of this journey.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sumiyoshi no matsugane arau nami no oto o kozue ni kakuru okitsu shiokaze
At Sumiyoshi, the salt wind from the open sea carries the sound of the waves washing the pine roots all the way up into the treetops.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hedate koshi sono toshitsuki mo aru mono o nagori ōkaru mine no akigiri
There were years, after all, when we lived far apart, and yet how much of you lingers after this parting, like the autumn mist upon the peak.
Sankashu - Jakuzen
Shitawareshi nagori o koso wa nagametsure tachikaerinishi mine no akigiri
It was the trace of you, so dear to me, that I kept gazing at after you rose and went home: the autumn mist upon the peak.
Sankashu - Saigyō
