- Shui Wakashu
Tanabata wa sora ni shiruran sasagani no ito kaku bakari matsuru kokoro o
The Weaver Star in the sky above must surely know my heart, how, hanging my threads as the spider hangs its own, I worship her with such devotion.
Shui Wakashu - Minamoto no Shitagō
Tanabata no akanu wakare mo yuyushiki o kyō shimo nado ka kimi ga kimaseru
Even the parting of the Tanabata stars, who never have their fill of each other, seems ill-omened; why then, on this very day of all days, have you come to me?
Shui Wakashu - Taira no Kanemori
Asato akete nagame ya suran tanabata no akanu wakare no sora o koitsutsu
This morning, do you too open your door and gaze lost in thought, longing for the sky where the Weaver Star parted from her love with so much longing left behind?
Shui Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Watashimori haya fune kakuse hitotose ni futatabi kimasu kimi naranaku ni
Ferryman, hide your boat away, and quickly, for he is not one who comes to me twice in a single year.
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
So envious am I of the Weaver Star that I wonder whether, for this one night at least, I should go down and stand in the River of Heaven.
Shui Wakashu - Emperor Murakami
Yo o umite waga kasu ito wa tanabata no namida no tama no o to ya naruran
The thread I spin, weary of the world, and lend to the Weaver Star: will it become the cord that strings the jewels of the tears she weeps at parting?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Though the banks of the River of Heaven are cool, shall I lend the Tanabata stars the breeze of this fan all the same?
Shui Wakashu - Nakatsukasa
Amanogawa ōgi no kaze ni kiri harete sora sumiwataru kasasagi no hashi
In the River of Heaven, the breeze of the fan clears away the mist, the sky grows clear from end to end, and the bridge of magpies stands out.
Shui Wakashu - Nakatsukasa
Koto no ne wa nazo ya kai naki tanabata no akanu wakare o hiki shi tomeneba
Why is the music of the koto of so little use? However I play, I cannot hold back the lingering parting of the Tanabata stars.
Shui Wakashu - Minamoto no Shitagō
Mizu no aya o oritachite kimu nugichirashi tanabatatsume ni koromo kasu yo wa
I will wade down into the river and wear the damask of the water, scattering my clothes about, on this night when I lend my robes to the Weaver Star.
Shui Wakashu - Taira no Sadabumi
O autumn wind, I would ask the Weaver Star: in what age of the world does she mean to meet her love?
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitaka
Amanogawa nochi no kyō dani harukeki o itsu tomo shiranu funade kanashi na
For the stars of the River of Heaven, even this day next year is far away; how sad, then, is your sailing, when no one knows when you will return.
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kintō
Aimizute hitohi mo kimi ni narawaneba tanabata yori mo ware zo masareru
Since I have never grown used to going even a single day without seeing you, my longing is greater than that of the Tanabata stars.
Shui Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Mutsumashiki Imose no Yama to shiraneba ya hatsuaki kiri no tachihedatsuran
Is it because it does not know that these are the fond hills of wife and husband, Imose, that the early autumn mist rises to part them?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
The fisherfolk of Suma, so used to the smoke of burning seaweed for salt, perhaps cannot tell apart even the mist that rises as autumn begins.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Do the waves, splashing over the maidenflowers glowing on the bank of the flowing river, secretly set their hearts on them?
Shui Wakashu - Minamoto no Shigeyuki
