Kaji o tae Yura no minato ni yoru fune no tayori mo shiranu okitsu shiokaze
A boat that has lost its oar drifts toward the harbor of Yura, knowing nothing it can rely on, and over it blows the salt wind from the open sea.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kujō Yoshitsune
Shirube se yo ato naki nami ni kogu fune no yukue mo shiranu yae no shiokaze
Be my guide. Like a boat rowing out over waves that keep no trace, I do not know where I am going, O eightfold wind off the sea.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Princess Shokushi
Ki no kuni ya Yura no minato ni hirou chō tamasaka ni dani aimiteshigana
At the harbor of Yura in the land of Ki, they say one may chance upon a gem; if only by such rare chance, I long to meet you.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Nagakata
Tsure mo naki hito no kokoro no uki ni hau ashi no shitane no ne o koso wa nake
At the bitterness of your uncaring heart, I weep aloud, like the reeds whose roots creep beneath the floating water.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Morotoshi
Naniwabito ika naru e ni ka kuchihaten au koto nami ni mi o tsukushitsutsu
In what inlet will the man of Naniwa rot away? No meeting ever comes, and still he wears himself out, like a channel stake sunk in the water.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kujō Yoshitsune
Ama no karu mirume o nami ni magaetsutsu Nagusa no hama o tazunewabinuru
Passing off the divers' seaweed as mere waves, with no sight of you and no name to speak, I have wearied of seeking along the shore of solace.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
Au made no mirume karubeki kata zo naki mada naminarenu iso no amabito
Until we meet, I have no shore and no way to reap that seaweed; I am like a fisher on the rocks, still unused to the waves.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Sagami
Mirume karu kata ya izuku zo sao sashite ware ni oshie yo ama no tsuribune
Where is the shore where that seaweed is reaped? Pole your boat this way and tell me, O fishing boat of the divers.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Ariwara no Narihira
Shitamoe ni omoi kienan keburi dani ato naki kumo no hate zo kanashiki
Consumed by the hidden fire of a love I never reveal, I shall surely burn away and die; and how sad the end will be, when even the smoke that rises from me becomes a cloud that leaves no trace.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - The Daughter of Fujiwara no Shunzei
Nabikaji na ama no moshiobi takisomete keburi wa sora ni kuyuri wabu tomo
She will never bend toward me, no. Even though, like fishers who have kindled their salt-making fires, I have begun to burn with love, and my smoke smolders and languishes in the sky.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Teika
Koi o nomi suma no urabito moshio tare hoshiaenu sode no hate o shiraba ya
Doing nothing but love, I am like the fisherfolk of Suma, drenched as they drip brine over the seaweed; I wish I knew what end awaits these sleeves of mine that can never be dried.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Mirume koso irinuru iso no kusa narame sode sae nami no shita ni kuchinuru
Chances to see you may well be as rare as the seaweed on a rocky shore, hidden whenever the tide comes in; and yet even my sleeves have rotted away beneath the waves of my tears.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Nijoin no Sanuki
Kimi kou to narumi no ura no hamahisagi shiorete nomi mo toshi o furu kana
Having become one who longs for you, I pass the years only drooping and drenched with tears, like the hisagi trees on the shore of Narumi Bay, wilting in the spray of the tide.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Minamoto no Toshiyori
Shirurame ya ko no ha furishiku tanimizu no iwama ni morasu shita no kokoro o
Could she know it? No, she could not: the heart hidden deep within me that I let seep out, as the valley stream beneath a bed of fallen leaves seeps out between the rocks.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - The Former Chancellor
Morasu na yo kumo iru mine no hatsushigure ko no ha wa shita ni iro kawaru tomo
Do not let it slip, you first winter shower falling on the cloud-hung peak, even if, down below, the leaves are quietly changing color.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Kaku to dani omou kokoro o iwaseyama shita yuku mizu no kusagakure tsutsu
I would have my heart say at least "this is how I feel," yet like the water flowing below Mount Iwase, hidden again and again among the grasses, my love stays out of sight.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Sanesada
