Ikade ka wa oto ni kokoro no sumazaran kusaki mo nabiku arashi narikeri
How could my heart not grow clear at such a sound? It is a storm that bends even the grasses and the trees.
The wind in the pines always sinks into me, unchanging as their evergreen; yet what is loneliest of all is the evening sky.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hodo fureba onaji miyako no uchi dani mo obotsukanasa wa towamahoshiki o
When some time has passed, one longs to ask after the other even within the same capital—how much more when we are far apart.
How uncertain this world is: after so many years of growing close to you, today I find myself thinking of parting.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Wakaru to mo naruru omoi ya kasanemashi suginishi kata no koyoi nariseba
Even had we parted, I could have piled up the feelings of growing close to you, if only tonight had come long ago.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Miyako ni mo tabi naru tsuki no kage o koso onaji kumoi no sora ni miru rame
In the capital as well, they must be looking at this same moonlight I see on my journey, in the very same sky.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kashikomaru shide ni namida no kakaru kana mata itsu ka wa to omou aware ni
On the paper streamers I offer in deep reverence my tears fall, so moved am I by the thought, "When will I ever come here again?"
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mukashi mishi nonaka no shimizu kawaraneba waga kage o mo ya omoiizuran
Since the clear spring in the moor that I saw long ago has not changed at all, might it too remember the reflection I once cast upon it?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kaeriyuku hito no kokoro o omou ni mo hanaregataki wa miyako narikeri
Thinking of the heart of the one who is going back, I realize that the hardest place to leave is the capital after all.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Shiba no io no shibashi miyako e kaeraji to omowan dani mo aware naru beshi
Just to think, here in my brushwood hut, that I will not go back to the capital for a while must itself be a sad thing.
The dew that settles on my sleeves as I sleep pillowed on grass along the road—do the people in the capital picture it in the evening?
Even the mountains I have crossed, which stand between me and the capital, seem in the end to have vanished into the haze.
Having come so far across the wide sea, with all those waves between, is it really the moon that rose over the capital that I am looking at now?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Wata no hara nami ni mo tsuki wa kakurekeri miyako no yama o nani itoiken
On the wide sea, the moon hides itself even behind the waves. Why, then, did I so resent the hills of the capital?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yamashiro no mizu no mikusa ni tsunagarete koma mo monouge ni miyuru tabi kana
Tethered to the grass of the Mizu pastures in Yamashiro, even my horse looks reluctant to go—such a dreary journey this is.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Fukaki yama ni sumikeru tsuki o mizariseba omoide mo naki waga mi naramashi
Had I not seen the moon shining so clear in these deep mountains, mine would have been a life without a single memory worth keeping.
Sankashu - Saigyō
