We parted only for a while; and what I took for the smoke of Fuji was the smoke of my own longing for my children, and its fire.

Azumaji no sora natsukashiki katami dani shinobu namida ni kumoru tsukikage
I love that sky of the eastern road; and even the moonlight, the one keepsake we still share, is clouded over by the tears of my longing.
Kayou rashi miyako no hoka no tsuki mite mo sora natsukashiki onaji nagame wa
Our hearts must pass between us: for even under this moon outside the capital, the gazing is the same, and the same sky is dear.
