Hito zo uki tanomenu tsuki wa megurikite mukashi wasurenu yomogiu no yado
It is you who are cruel. The moon, which never promised anything, comes circling back, still remembering the past, to this house overgrown with mugwort.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Hideyoshi
Wakuraba ni machitsuru yoi mo fukenikeri sa ya wa chigirishi yama no ha no tsuki
The evening I spent waiting on a rare promise has grown late. Is this what was promised, O moon above the mountain's rim?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Konu hito o matsu to wa nakute matsu yoi no fukeyuku sora no tsuki mo urameshi
Not that I am waiting for the one who will not come, and yet I wait; as the evening sky grows late, even the moon becomes a grievance.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Ariie
Matsuyama to chigirishi hito wa tsurenakute sode kosu nami ni nokoru tsukikage
The one who vowed by the Pine Mountain that no wave would ever cross it has turned cold, and on the waves of tears that spill over my sleeve the moonlight lingers.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Teika
Naraikoshi ta ga itsuwari mo mada shirade matsu to seshi ma no niwa no yomogiu
Not yet knowing whose were the lies men have always told, I meant only to wait, and while I waited the garden became overgrown with mugwort.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Shunzei's Daughter
Ato taete asaji ga sue ni narinikeri tanomeshi yado no niwa no shiratsuyu
With no more footprints, the garden has become nothing but the tips of cogon grass; in this house where you made me trust you would come, white dew lies upon the garden.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Nijoin no Sanuki
Konu hito o omoitaetaru niwa no omo no yomogi ga sue zo matsu ni masareru
In the garden where I have given up hope of the one who never comes, the tips of the mugwort now grow higher than the pines, and thicker than in the days when I still waited.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jakuren
Tazunete mo sode ni kaku beki kata zo naki fukaki yomogi no tsuyu no kagoto o
Though I come seeking, there is no one left on whose sleeve I might hang my complaint, the reproach I would make of the dew on the deep-grown mugwort.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Minamoto no Michiteru
Katami tote hono fumiwakeshi ato mo nashi koshi wa mukashi no niwa no ogihara
Not even the faint path you trod through the grass remains as a keepsake; your visits belong to the past, and now the garden is all a field of reeds.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yasusue
Nagori o ba niwa no asaji ni todomeokite tare yue kimi ga sumiukarekemu
Leaving your remnants behind in the cogon grass of the garden, for whose sake did you wander away from the home where you once lived?
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Gyōhen
Wasurezu wa nareshi sode mo ya kōruramu nenu yo no toko no shimo no samushiro
If you have not forgotten me, is the sleeve I knew so well frozen now with tears? On my bed on sleepless nights I lie on a narrow, cold mat covered in frost.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Teika
Kaze fukaba mine ni wakaremu kumo o dani arishi nagori no katami tomo miyo
When the wind blows, the clouds will part on the mountain peak; look upon even those clouds, at least, as keepsakes of what once was between us.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Ietaka
Iwazariki ima komu made no sora no kumo tsukihi hedatete mono omoe to wa
You never said that until you came "soon," I should spend the months and days apart from you like clouds in the sky that hide the moon and sun, brooding over love.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Omoiide yo ta ga kanegoto no sue naramu kinō no kumo no ato no yamakaze
Remember, please: whose promise has come to this end? Where yesterday's clouds once hung, only the mountain wind now blows.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Ietaka
Wasureyuku hito yue sora o nagamureba taedae ni koso kumo mo miekere
When I gaze at the sky because of the one who is forgetting me, I see that the clouds too appear only in broken wisps, like our bond.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Norikane
Wasurenaba ikeramu mono ka to omoishi ni sore mo kanawanu kono yo narikeri
I thought that if you forgot me I could not possibly go on living, yet this is a world where even that is denied me.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Inpumon-in no Taifu
