咽ぶとも知らじな心かはらやに
我のみ消たぬ下の煙は

Roma-ji: Musebu tomo shiraji na kokoro kawaraya ni ware nomi kesanu shita no keburi wa
English Translation: That I choke with tears
you will never know, changed heart,
in the tile kiln where
only I do not put out
the smoke that smolders below.
Meaning: You whose heart has changed will never know that I am choking with tears, like the smoke of a tile kiln—the smoldering smoke of longing deep in my heart that I alone do not put out.
Commentary: Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 1324

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the topic 'Love Forgotten.'"
This is the seventh poem of the sequence of love's grief sung through autumn imagery. You whose heart has changed will not know, the speaker says, that I choke on the smoke of hidden longing that I alone do not put out, like a tile kiln. Continuing from the preceding poem, it was composed on the topic "Love Forgotten."
The author, "Teika, Lord of the Court," is Fujiwara no Teika. A son of Fujiwara no Shunzei, he was one of the compilers of the Shinkokinshū and later compiled the Shinchokusenshū on his own.

The first line, "musebu tomo," means "that I choke with tears." It overlays choking on smoke, leading to the smoke of the fourth line on.
In the second line, "shiraji na kokoro," "ji" is a negative conjecture and "na" an exclamation: "you will not know."
In the third line, "kawaraya ni," "kawara" is a pivot word meaning both a heart that has "changed" and a "tile kiln." From "kokoro" in the second line it runs on to "a changed heart," while calling up the scene of the kiln.
The fourth line, "ware nomi kesanu," means "that I alone do not extinguish."
The last line, "shita no keburi wa," means "the smoke smoldering deep in the heart." The kiln fire burns on below and sends up smoke; in inverted order, the poem ends by presenting the fire of love that does not go out even after one is forgotten.
