知られじな同じ袖には通ふとも
誰が夕暮れと頼む秋風

Roma-ji: Shirareji na onaji sode ni wa kayou tomo ta ga yūgure to tanomu akikaze
English Translation: No one will know it:
though it passes through the same
sleeves for all alike,
whose evening is it that trusts
in this wind of autumn now?
Meaning: No one will ever know: though the autumn wind blows through every sleeve alike, whose evening visit is it that this wind is trusted to bring?
Commentary: Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 1325

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the topic 'Love Forgotten.'"
This is the eighth poem of the sequence of love's grief sung through autumn imagery. Though the autumn wind blows through every sleeve alike, the speaker says, no one will know whose evening visit it is trusted to bring. Continuing from the preceding poem, it was composed on the topic "Love Forgotten."
The author, "Ietaka, Lord of the Court," is Fujiwara no Ietaka. A son of Fujiwara no Mitsutaka, he studied poetry under Fujiwara no Shunzei and became one of the compilers of the Shinkokinshū. He later reached the Junior Second Rank and was called the Mibu Second Rank.

The first line, "shirareji na," means "it will not be known," and the poem breaks after it. It recasts "shiraji na" in the first line of the preceding poem in the passive.
The second line, "onaji sode ni wa," means "through the same sleeves." The autumn wind blows through everyone's sleeves alike.
The third line, "kayou tomo," is a concessive supposition: "even though it blows through."
The fourth line, "ta ga yūgure to," means "whose evening of visiting." It asks whether it is the evening of the speaker, now forgotten, or of someone newly loved.
The last line, "tanomu akikaze," ends on a noun. It presents as a hidden inner feeling that the same autumn wind means one thing to someone who can trust in a visit and another to one who has been forgotten.
