恋しくは下にを思へ紫の
根摺りの衣色に出づなゆめ

Roma-ji: Koishiku wa shita ni o omoe murasaki no nezuri no koromo iro ni izu na yume
English Translation: If you long for me,
keep it hidden in your heart;
like robes dyed purple
rubbed with the gromwell root,
never let your color show

The poet urges the beloved: if you long for me, keep it within, and never let it show like the color of a robe dyed with purple gromwell root. The vivid color of the dyed robe serves as a figure for love that shows itself, warning the other to guard their secret love.
