Ware mo mitsu hito ni mo tsugemu Katsushika no Mama no Tegona ga okutsukidokoro

我れも見つ人にも告げむ勝鹿の
真間の手児名が奥つ城ところ

Roma-ji: Ware mo mitsu hito ni mo tsugemu Katsushika no Mama no Tegona ga okutsukidokoro
English Translation: I too have seen it,
and I shall tell it to others:
in Katsushika,
of Tegona of Mama,
the place where she lies at rest.
Meaning: I too have seen it, and I will tell others of it—the resting place of Tegona of Mama in Katsushika.

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "A poem with tanka composed by Yamabe no Sukune Akahito on passing the grave of the maiden of Mama in Katsushika," with the note "In the eastern dialect, Kazushika no Mama no Tego" — "Envoy"
This is the first envoy to a long poem composed on visiting the grave of Tegona of Mama in Katsushika. He has seen with his own eyes the grave of the legendary Tegona and will tell others of it, honoring the maiden of legend and handing her memory down. The strong rhythm, cutting off short in the first and second lines, conveys his emotion at seeing the grave.
Tegona of Mama was a beautiful girl said to have lived at Mama in Katsushika, Shimōsa; troubled by the courtship of many men, she is said to have thrown herself into the inlet. Mama is in present-day Ichikawa, Chiba.
The poet, Yamabe no Akahito, was a court poet of the reign of Shōmu who composed many poems on royal excursions and excelled in clear, limpid landscape verse. Later ages ranked him with Kakinomoto no Hitomaro as a "Saint of Poetry."

First line "I too have seen it": tsu is perfective; the sentence breaks here.
Second line "and I shall tell it to others": mu expresses resolve; the sentence breaks again.
Third line "in Katsushika" names Katsushika in Shimōsa.
Fourth line "of Tegona of Mama": Tegona is the legendary maiden's name; tego is said to mean "girl."
Fifth line "the place where she lies at rest": okutsuki is a grave, ending on a noun that places the grave last.
