English Translation
In Katsushika,
in the inlet of Mama,
swaying with the waves,
the fine seaweed she once reaped—
Tegona comes to my mind.
Meaning
Seeing the fine seaweed swaying in the inlet of Mama in Katsushika, I think of Tegona, who must once have gathered it here.
Commentary
Book Three Elegies 433

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "A poem with tanka composed by Yamabe no Sukune Akahito on passing the grave of the maiden of Mama in Katsushika," with the note "In the eastern dialect, Kazushika no Mama no Tego" — "Envoy"
This is the second envoy to the long poem on the grave of Tegona of Mama. Seeing the fine seaweed swaying in the inlet of Mama, he pictures Tegona, who must once have gathered it here. Where the preceding poem conveyed his emotion at seeing the grave, this one calls up Tegona as she was in life from the scene of the inlet.
Tegona of Mama was a beautiful girl said to have lived at Mama in Katsushika, Shimōsa; troubled by the courtship of many men, she is said to have thrown herself into the inlet. Mama is in present-day Ichikawa, Chiba.
The poet, Yamabe no Akahito, was a court poet of the reign of Shōmu who composed many poems on royal excursions and excelled in clear, limpid landscape verse. Later ages ranked him with Kakinomoto no Hitomaro as a "Saint of Poetry."

First line "In Katsushika" names Katsushika in Shimōsa, as in the preceding poem's third line.
Second line "in the inlet of Mama": the inlet where Tegona is said to have drowned herself.
Third line "swaying with the waves": uchi is a prefix.
Fourth line "the fine seaweed she once reaped": kemu is past conjecture.
Fifth line "Tegona comes to my mind": shi is emphatic and omooyu means to come to mind unbidden.
