Book Four Love Poems 633
Headnote: "Two poems sent in reply by the maiden"
This is the first of the maiden's two poems answering Prince Yuhara. Was it because he thought of her so much, she asks, that he appeared in her dream as she slept alone on half her pillow? Against his reproach, she gently takes the dream as a sign of his love.
The author is a woman who exchanged poems with Prince Yuhara; her name has not come down.
First line, "Did you think of me," means so very much.
Second line, "all that much, I wonder, then," uses keme, the perfective of past conjectural kemu, with kamo: was it because you thought of me? It is closed by shi in the fifth line.
Third line, "on the spread bedclothes," is shikitae no, a pillow word for "pillow."
Fourth line, "as I slept by half my pillow," uses katasaru, "to keep to one side," an image of sleeping alone.
Fifth line, "that you came into my dream," uses shi, the attributive of past ki, closing kamo: you appeared in my dream.
