Book Four Love Poems 701
Headnote: "Two poems sent by Kawachi no Momoe no Otome to Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi"
This is the first of two poems Kawachi no Momoe no Otome sent to Ōtomo no Yakamochi. Having met him only fleetingly, she wonders what will become of her and when she may see him again, even from afar.
The author, Kawachi no Momoe no Otome, was a woman of whom little is known who exchanged poems with Ōtomo no Yakamochi.
First line, "Just a fleeting glimpse," means barely, faintly.
Second line, "having met you, what now then," means having met you.
Third line, "will become of me," runs to six syllables: what will happen? The poem breaks after this line.
Fourth line, "on what day, I wonder, will," uses the questioning ka.
Fifth line, "I see you again from afar," means shall I see you again at a distance?
