Commentary
Book Four Love Poems 702

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Two poems sent by Kawachi no Momoe no Otome to Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi"
In the second poem she says she has not forgotten, to this day, the moonlight of the night they met, for she thinks of him without pause, declaring her unchanging love.
The author, Kawachi no Momoe no Otome, was a woman of whom little is known who exchanged poems with Ōtomo no Yakamochi.

First line, "In that jet-black night," is nubatama no, a pillow word for "night."
Second line, "the moonlight of that same night," means the moon of that night.
Third line, "even to this day," means until today.
Fourth line, "I have never once forgotten," means I do not forget; the poem breaks after this line.
Fifth line, "thinking of you without pause," uses the emphatic shi: because I think of you ceaselessly, giving the reason by inversion.
