Commentary
Book Seven Miscellaneous Poems 1084

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the Moon"
Waiting and waiting for a moon that will not come out from the mountain's rim, the poet sighs, wondering how long he must go on. The waiting for the moon may also be read as the heart of a lover waiting for someone's visit.
It shares its first two lines, "On the mountain's rim the moon lingers," with poem 1071 in this book. That poem states as a result that the night has grown late, while this one voices the lament of someone still waiting as the night deepens. The poet is unknown.

The first line, "On the mountain's rim," is the same as in poem 1071 and refers to the ridge where the moon will rise.
The second line, "the moon lingers, hesitant," is also shared with poem 1071 and depicts a moon slow to appear.
In the third line, "till when, I wonder," the particle "ka" expresses doubt and is answered by "ramu" in the fourth line.
The fourth line, "must I sit here waiting on," closes in the attributive "ramu" in response to "ka," and the poem pauses here.
The final line, "while the night keeps growing late," corresponds to the last line of poem 1071, "and the night has grown so late," here expressing time still in progress with "tsutsu." It is also identical to the last line of poem 1075 in this book.
