Book Seven Miscellaneous Poems 1085
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the Moon"
The poet means to wave his sleeves toward his beloved's house and asks the clouds not to hide the moon rising between the trees, so that his gesture may be seen. Waving the sleeves was a gesture with magical power to convey one's feelings to someone far away.
Within the group on the moon, the moonlight is treated as a helper that lets the lovers' hearts reach each other. The poet is unknown.
The first line, "Toward my love's home," means toward the neighborhood of his wife's house.
In the second line, "I will wave my sleeves to her," "mu" expresses intention. Sleeve waving was a gesture conveying the pain of parting or longing, and the poem pauses here.
The third line, "coming out between the trees," depicts the moon rising through the trees.
The fourth line refers to the moon emerging from between the trees.
The final line, "O clouds, do not trail," is a prohibition formed by placing the adverb "na" before the continuative form of the verb: clouds, do not drift across it.
