Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2049
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Tanabata"
This poem sings of the joy of finally meeting tonight the one the speaker has longed for through long years at the crossing of the Heavenly River. The Weaver who, in the preceding poem, vowed to loosen her sash and wait has here at last fulfilled the meeting, so time moves from waiting to meeting within the series. Like the preceding poem it begins "ama no kawa kawato ni," and the two form a pair.
The first line, "the Heavenly River," is the same opening as the preceding poem.
The second line, "staying at the crossing," corresponds to "standing at the crossing" in the preceding poem.
The third line, "through months and years," marks the long span.
In the fourth line, "koikoshi kimi ni," "shi" is the attributive of the past "ki": you whom I have longed for.
In the last line, "koyoi aeru ka mo," "ka mo" is exclamatory, closing with joy at the meeting.
