Roma-ji

Asu yori wa aga tamadoko o uchiharai kimi to inezute hitori ka mo nemu

English Translation
From tomorrow on,
though I sweep my jeweled bed
clean and ready still,
never sleeping by your side,
must I sleep alone, I wonder?
Meaning
From tomorrow, though I sweep my jeweled bed clean, I will not sleep with you—must I sleep alone?
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2050

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Tanabata"
This poem, in the Weaver's voice, laments that once the night of meeting dawns, from tomorrow she will sleep alone, not with him, even if she sweeps her bed clean. Right after the joy of meeting in the preceding poem comes this lament over tomorrow's parting, so the joy of meeting and the sorrow of parting lie side by side. Like "asu yori wa" in 2037, it laments the days of separation from tomorrow on.

The first line, "from tomorrow on," is the same phrase as the third line of 2037.
In the second line, "aga tamadoko o," "tamadoko" means a lovely bed.
The third line, "sweeping it clean," describes the preparation.
The fourth line, "not sleeping with you," names the absence.
In the last line, "hitori ka mo nemu," "ka mo" is an interrogative particle in kakari-musubi with the attributive "mu," closing with a lament over sleeping alone.
