Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2169
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Dew"
This poem says that each time the evening shower falls, the white dew on the pampas plumes of Kasuga Plain comes to mind. From a familiar evening shower the heart turns to the dew of distant Kasuga Plain, showing a longing for a beautiful scene. The kundoku carries a variant for the second line, "uchifureba." Against the dew on bush clover in the preceding poem, this one sings of dew on pampas grass, changing the plant on which the dew lies.
The first line, "of the evening shower," names the rain.
The second line, "each time the rain falls," marks recurrence.
The third line, "of Kasuga Plain," names the place.
The fourth line, "on the pampas plumes," names where the dew lies.
In the last line, "shiratsuyu omōyu," "omōyu" means to come to mind; the line is hypermetric, closing with thoughts of the dew of Kasuga.
