Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2184
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
This poem asks that the autumn mountains not be mentioned, for the autumn leaves the speaker had forgotten would come back to mind. It suggests a memory tied to autumn leaves and the pain of recalling it. It may be read as hinting at parting from someone with whom the leaves were once viewed, making it a poem full of reminiscence within the autumn leaves group.
The first line, "the autumn mountains," names the subject.
In the second line, "yume hito kaku na," "yume" means never, "kaku" to speak of, and "na" is prohibitive. The poem breaks here.
In the third line, "wasurenishi," "ni" marks completion and "shi" is the attributive of the past "ki": that I had forgotten.
The fourth line, "those autumn leaves," names what is recalled.
In the last line, "omōyuraku ni," "omōyuraku" is the nominalized "omōyu": since they come to mind. By inversion it gives the reason at the end.
