on Mount Futakami
the crimson leaves stream away
as the showers keep on falling.

Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2185

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
This poem tells how, on coming over the Ōsaka pass, the speaker saw autumn leaves streaming down on Mount Futakami amid falling showers. The grand scene of falling leaves seen on a journey is vividly drawn together with the showers. Against the mountain colored by showers in 2180, this poem sings of leaves scattered by showers, showing that showers both dye and scatter the leaves.

In the first line, "ōsaka o," Ōsaka is the pass on the border between Yamato and Kawachi.
The second line, "as I come crossing," names the journey.
In the third line, "futakami ni," Futakami is Mount Futakami on the Yamato-Kawachi border.
The fourth line, "the autumn leaves stream," breaks the poem after the fourth line.
In the last line, "shigure furitsutsu," "tsutsu" marks continuation; by inversion the scene in the showers is set at the end.
