English Translation
When the autumn comes,
from the white dew settling down,
by my garden gate
the tips of the short grass blades
have turned color, as I see.
Meaning
When autumn comes, with the settling white dew, the tips of the short grass by my gate have turned color.
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2186

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
This poem sings of the tips of the short grass by the speaker's gate turning color with the white dew of autumn. Like the lower leaves of bush clover in 2182, it senses the deepening of autumn in the coloring of familiar grasses. It shows a delicate observation that catches not only the trees' foliage but the coloring of small grasses underfoot.

The first line, "when autumn comes," marks the season.
The second line, "in the white dew that settles," names the cause.
The third line, "of my gate," names the place.
In the fourth line, "asaji ga uraba," "uraba" means leaf tips.
In the last line, "irozukinikeri," "keri" expresses realization; it is the same ending as 2182.
