Autumn bush clover,
its lower leaves have turned red;
new as jewels, time—
since the months have passed us by,
is the wind grown fierce, perhaps?

Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2205
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Autumn Leaves"
Seeing the lower leaves of the autumn bush clover turned color, this poem wonders whether it is because the months have passed and the wind has grown fierce. Whereas the preceding poem took the weight of dew as the cause, this one surmises the fierceness of the wind, singing of the same clover leaves with a different cause.
The first line, "of the autumn bush clover," names the plant.
In the second line, "shitaba momichinu," "nu" marks completion, and the poem breaks here.
The third line, "aratama no," is a pillow word attached to "month."
The fourth line, "since the months have passed," names the time.
In the last line, "kaze o itami ka mo," "itashi" means fierce, "mi" marks cause, and "ka mo" is a question, closing by surmising the cause.
