at my journey's makeshift hut
the showers have come,

with no one here to dry them.

Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2235
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Rain"
This poem laments that showers falling on the traveling hut for harvesting the autumn fields have soaked the sleeves, with no one to dry them. It shows the loneliness of a temporary lodging on a journey and thoughts of a wife who would care for him at home. Like 2174, where dew settles on the sleeves in a makeshift hut, it sings of the loneliness of wet sleeves in a temporary lodging for the autumn harvest.
The first line, "reaping the autumn fields," names the work.
In the second line, "tabi no iori ni," "iori" means a makeshift hut.
The third line, "showers falling," names the rain.
In the fourth line, "waga sode nurenu," "nu" marks completion, and the poem breaks here.
The last line, "with no one to dry them," gives by inversion the loneliness at the end.
