Momichiba o chirasu shigure no furu nae ni yo sae zo samuki hitori shi nureba

English Translation
Crimson leaves scattered
by the showers as they fall—
even so, with them,
even the night itself is cold,
when I sleep here all alone.
Meaning
As the autumn showers fall, scattering the colored leaves, even the night grows cold—for I sleep alone.
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 2237

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Rain"
This poem sings of the night of sleeping alone feeling all the colder as showers fall scattering the autumn leaves, and it closes the rain group. The chill of the showers and the loneliness of sleeping alone overlap, showing the solitude of a late autumn night. Like 1981 in the summer love poems, where even the short nights are hard to pass sleeping alone, it sings of the loneliness of sleeping alone.

The first line, "the autumn leaves," names what is scattered.
The second line, "the showers that scatter," names the rain.
In the third line, "furu nae ni," "nae ni" means along with: as they fall.
In the fourth line, "yo sae zo samuki," "sae" expresses addition and "zo" is an emphatic particle in kakari-musubi with the attributive "samuki." The poem breaks here.
In the last line, "hitori shi nureba," "shi" is emphatic: since I sleep alone. By inversion it gives the reason for the cold at the end.
