classic waka stream

我妹子は衣にあらなむ秋風の
寒きこのころ下に着ましを
Roma-ji

Wagimoko wa koromo ni aranamu akikaze no samuki kono koro shita ni kimashi o

English Translation
My darling, my wife,
if you only were a robe!
With the autumn wind
blowing cold these days of late,
I would wear you next to me.
Meaning
If only my beloved were a robe! In these days of cold autumn wind, I would wear her next to my skin.
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2260

Headnote: "Love Expressed Through the Wind"
This poem wishes that, in these days of cold autumn wind, the beloved wife were a robe, so she could be worn always as an undergarment. Its headnote is "Love Expressed Through the Wind." The wish never to be apart from the beloved even for a moment is expressed in the bold wish that she become a robe. The cold autumn wind sung in the wind group of the miscellaneous poems here draws out, in the love poems, a heart longing for oneness with the beloved.

The first line, "wagimoko wa," uses a man's affectionate word for his wife.
In the second line, "koromo ni aranamu," "namu" expresses a wish toward another: I wish you were a robe. The poem breaks here.
The third line, "the autumn wind," names the wind.
The fourth line, "these cold days," names the time.
In the last line, "shita ni kimashi o," "shita" means an undergarment, "mashi" is counterfactual, and "o" exclamatory: I would wear you close.
