Hatsusekaze kaku fuku yoi wa itsu made ka koromo katashiki waga hitori nemu

English Translation
Hatsuse wind blows
in this way throughout the night—
until when, how long,
spreading out one sleeve alone,
must I sleep here all alone?
Meaning
On a night when the wind of Hatsuse blows like this, how long must I spread out only one sleeve of my robe and sleep alone?
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2261

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through the Wind"
This poem laments how long the speaker must sleep alone, spreading one sleeve of the robe, on cold nights when the Hatsuse wind blows. "Koromo katashiki," spreading one's own sleeve, expresses sleeping alone, and the loneliness of a solitary night in cold wind stands out all the more. Whereas the preceding poem wished to wear the beloved as a robe, this one laments spreading one's own robe alone, a contrast around the robe.

The first line, "hatsusekaze," means the wind blowing from Hatsuse in Yamato.
The second line, "the night it blows like this," names the time.
In the third line, "itsu made ka," "ka" is an interrogative particle in kakari-musubi with "mu" in the last line.
The fourth line, "koromo katashiki," spreading one sleeve, expresses sleeping alone.
The last line, "waga hitori nemu," must I sleep alone?, answers "ka."
