Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2262
Headnote: "Love Expressed Through Rain"
This poem laments that in the season of long rains that scatter the autumn bush clover, many are the nights spent sitting up alone in longing. Its headnote is "Love Expressed Through Rain." The unceasing long rain hinders the beloved's visit and deepens the brooding of sleepless nights. It shares its last line with the Tanabata poem 2030, "many are the nights I sit facing the river, longing," overlaying the Tanabata longing facing the Heavenly River with the longing of rainy nights.
The first line, "the autumn bush clover," names what is scattered.
In the second line, "chirasu nagame no," "nagame" means long rain; the line is hypermetric.
The third line, "in the season they fall," names the time.
The fourth line, "sitting up alone," names the speaker's state.
In the last line, "kouru yo zo ōki," "zo" is an emphatic particle in kakari-musubi with the attributive "ōki"; the line is hypermetric.
