Kouru hi no kenagaku shi areba misonou no karaai no hana no iro ni idenikeri

English Translation
Days of longing long
have gone on for such a time,
in my garden plot
like the karaai flowers
it has come to show its hue.
Meaning
The days of longing have gone on so long that, like the cockscomb flowers in my garden, my love has come to show its color.
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2278

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through Flowers"
This poem says that because the days of longing have gone on so long, the love has at last come to show outwardly, like the vivid color of the cockscomb in the garden. Whereas 2274 and 2275 resolved not to let love show, this poem sings of love showing despite oneself, contrasting the resolve and the failure of a hidden love.

The first line, "of the days of longing," names the span.
In the second line, "kenagaku shi areba," "shi" is emphatic and "ba" an established condition: since they have been long. The line is hypermetric.
In the third line, "misonou no," "mi" is a prefix: of the garden.
In the fourth line, "karaai no hana no," "karaai" is thought to be an old name for cockscomb, a vivid crimson flower.
In the last line, "iro ni idenikeri," "iro ni izu" means for feelings to show and "keri" expresses realization.
