Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2279
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through Flowers"
This poem says that seeing the maidenflower now blooming in the village, the speaker's longing has grown past bearing. The name "ominaeshi," maidenflower, evokes a woman, showing an irrepressible longing for a beloved. Following the preceding poem, in which love showed despite oneself, this one too sings of a love that cannot be held back.
The first line, "in my village," names the place.
The second line, "the flowers now blooming," names the season.
The third line, "ominaeshi," the maidenflower, whose name evokes a woman.
In the fourth line, "aenu kokoro ni," "au" means to endure: with a heart unable to endure.
In the last line, "nao koinikeri," "nao" means still, after all, and "keri" expresses realization.
