English Translation
Longing so for you,
drooping, wilting, sad at heart,

the autumn wind came blowing,
and the moon has sunk down low.
Meaning
As I sat, wilting and forlorn with longing for you, the autumn wind blew, and the moon sank low.
Commentary
Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2298

Headnote: "Love Expressed Through the Moon"
This poem tells how, while the speaker sat wilting and forlorn with longing, the autumn wind blew and the moon sank toward the west. Its headnote is "Love Expressed Through the Moon." The moon's sinking marks the long passage of time, showing the length and loneliness of a night sunk in love. Its upper lines are nearly the same as "kimi ni koi urabure oreba" in 2143 of the miscellaneous poems; whereas there the deer's cry was heard, here the moon's sinking is seen.

The first line, "longing for you," names the cause.
In the second line, "shinae urabure," "shinayu" means to wilt and "uraburu" to be downcast.
The third line, "as I sat," uses "ba" as an established condition.
The fourth line, "the autumn wind blew," names the change.
In the last line, "tsuki katabukinu," "katabuku" means to sink and "nu" marks completion, closing with the lateness of the night.
