Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2299
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through the Moon"
This poem likens the beloved to an autumn moon hidden in clouds, saying that not seeing him for even a short while makes the longing so great. The longing of a time without meeting, as the moon hides in clouds, shows together with the beauty of the autumn moon. Like the Tanabata poem 2025, "even the moon meant to shine for ten thousand ages is hidden by clouds," it uses the moon hidden in clouds as a figure for an unmet beloved.
The first line, "of the autumn night," is hypermetric.
In the second line, "tsuki ka mo kimi wa," "ka mo" is an interrogative particle in kakari-musubi with "koishiki" in the last line, likening the beloved to the moon.
The third line, "hidden by clouds," describes the moon.
In the fourth line, "shimashiku mineba," "shimashiku" means for a while: since I have not seen you for a while.
In the last line, "kokoda koishiki," "kokoda" means so much, closing in the attributive form answering "ka mo."
