Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2301
Headnote: "Love Expressed Through the Night"
This poem says that though the speaker tries to give up loving, on nights when the autumn wind blows cold, thoughts turn to the beloved after all. Its headnote is "Love Expressed Through the Night." The struggle between the will to cut off love and the longing that grows on cold nights shows through. It shares its last line, "kimi o shi zo omou," with 2294.
The first line, "yoshieyashi," is an interjection of resignation.
In the second line, "koiji to suredo," "ji" expresses negative intention and "do" is adversative: though I try not to love.
The third line, "the autumn wind," names the wind.
The fourth line, "on nights it blows cold," names the time.
The last line, "kimi o shi zo omou," is the same ending as 2294, strengthening the thought of the beloved with the emphatic "shi" and "zo."
