Someone surely thinks,
"Oh, how thoughtless, how absurd!"—
through the autumn night,
long and slow, I only lie
wide awake, just lying there.

Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2302
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love Expressed Through the Night"
This poem imagines that others must think the speaker foolish for only lying awake through the long autumn night. Looking objectively at the self sleepless for love, it shows both shame and lament. Following the longing on cold nights in the preceding poem, this one sings of the pain of sleeplessness through the long autumn night.
The first line, "someone," names the imagined observer.
In the second line, "ana kokoro na to," "ana" is an interjection and "kokoro na" means thoughtless, foolish.
In the third line, "omouramu," "ramu" is present conjecture: must be thinking. The poem breaks here.
The fourth line, "through the long autumn night," names the time.
The last line, "nezame fusu nomi," only lying awake, closes with the image of a sleepless night.
