Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2304
Headnote: "Love Expressed Through Robes"
This poem, rather than wearing a robe dyed the lovely colors of autumn leaves, would give it to the beloved and wishes he would wear it even at night. Its headnote is "Love Expressed Through Robes." Giving a robe was a token of love, and the wish that he wear it at night carries the wish that he think of her when he sleeps. Like 1961 in the summer poems, where the hototogisu urged giving a robe to the beloved, it sings of the heart that gives a robe to the beloved.
In the first line, "akitsuha ni," "akitsuha" means autumn leaves.
In the second line, "nioeru koromo," "niou" means to glow with color: a beautifully dyed robe.
In the third line, "ware wa kiji," "ji" expresses negative intention: I will not wear it. The poem breaks here.
In the fourth line, "kimi ni matsuraba," "matsuru" means to present and "ba" marks a supposition.
In the last line, "yoru mo kiru gane," "gane" is a particle of purpose: so that you may wear it at night too.
