Even on a journey
one would loosen sash and sleep,
but with gossip thick
I lie down in all my clothes
through this long, long night alone.

Book Ten Autumn Love Poems 2305
Headnote: "Poems in Dialogue"
This poem laments that though one loosens the sash to rest even on a journey, gossip is so thick that the speaker cannot meet the beloved and sleeps alone fully clothed. Its headnote is "Poems in Dialogue." The pain of love hindered by others' eyes and rumors overlaps with the loneliness of sleeping alone through the long autumn night. It forms an exchange with the next poem, 2306.
In the first line, "tabi ni sura," "sura" means even: even on a journey.
In the second line, "himo toku mono o," "mono o" is adversative: though one loosens the sash.
In the third line, "koto shigemi," "koto" means gossip and "mi" marks cause: since rumors are thick.
In the fourth line, "marone zo waga suru," "marone" is sleeping fully clothed and "zo" an emphatic particle in kakari-musubi with the attributive "suru." The poem breaks here.
The last line, "through this long night," names by inversion the time at the end.
