Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2570

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
If she goes on only longing like this, she will surely die, so the beloved should keep coming to her without telling even her mother: this is a woman's plea to her lover. Wary of the mother who watches over, and at times hinders, a daughter's love, she nonetheless states her urgent wish to meet him plainly.
It belongs to the category "Expressing One's Feelings Directly." The figure of a daughter loving in secret from her mother appears often in the love poems of Book Eleven of the Man'yoshu. The Chinese-character text reads "母毛告都," and some read it as "haha ni mo tsugetsu," taking it to mean that since she has told even her mother, he should keep coming; here the reading of the main text is followed.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather the love poems of people whose names have not come down to us.

First line, "kaku nomi shi": "only in this way." "Shi" is emphatic, pointing to the present pain of love going on.
Second line, "koiba shinubemi": "if I keep longing, I am likely to die, and so." "Bemi" is the stem of the auxiliary "beshi" with "mi," expressing a reason.
Third line, "tarachine no": a pillow word attached to "mother."
Fourth line, "haha ni mo tsugezu": "without telling even my mother." It reflects an age when a mother's consent carried great weight in a daughter's marriage.
Fifth line, "yamazu kayowase": "keep coming without ceasing." "Kayowase" is the imperative of "kayou" with the honorific auxiliary "su," expressing a request to the beloved.
