Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2571
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
A man can perhaps forget the pain of love while spending lively hours with his friends, but she, a woman, can only suffer: this is a woman's poem on the hardship of waiting. Contrasting the circumstances of men and women, it describes a heart that bears love alone, with no means of distraction.
It belongs to the category "Expressing One's Feelings Directly." Poem 2584, a little later in this book, is spoken from a man's side, lamenting that he who prided himself on being a brave man now suffers from love, and it stands in contrast to this poem.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather the love poems of people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "masurao wa": "a brave man." It refers to a manly man, and the particle "wa" sets him apart from the speaker, a woman.
Second line, "tomo no sawaki ni": "in the bustle of his friends." It describes men enjoying themselves together.
Third line, "nagusamoru": "being comforted." It is an old form with the same meaning as "nagusamu," and modifies "kokoro" in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "kokoro mo aramu": "he may have a heart." The conjectural auxiliary "mu" guesses at the man's feelings, and the poem pauses here after the fourth line.
Fifth line, "ware zo kurushiki": "it is I who suffer." The adjective closes in the attributive form "kurushiki" in agreement with the particle "zo," strongly asserting her own pain.
