Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2603
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
Believing that she has already given her heart to him, a woman accepts the pain of love: whatever the suffering of not meeting, so be it, she will go on loving. Rather than lamenting a love that does not go her way, the poem expresses a resolve to endure.
Following "this single heart" in the preceding poem, this poem also begins with the word "heart" and speaks of a woman who has devoted her heart to one man. Whereas the preceding poem vows not to untie the heart, this one states a resolve to go on loving with the heart she has given.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "kokoro o shi": "my heart." "Shi" is an emphatic particle, stressing that it is her precious heart.
Second line, "kimi ni matsuru to": "that I offer to you." "Matsuru" is the humble form of "to give," expressing the offering of her heart to him.
Third line, "omoereba": "since I think so." "Omoere" is "omou" with the continuative "ri," and "ba" gives an established reason.
Fourth line, "yoshi konokoro wa": "well then, in these days." "Yoshi" is an adverb expressing reluctant acceptance, conveying resolve tinged with resignation.
Fifth line, "koitsutsu o aramu": "I will go on loving." "Tsutsu" expresses continuation, "o" is an interjectory particle strengthening the tone, and "mu" expresses intention. The line has one syllable too many.
