though you may weep and cry aloud,
do not let it show,
so that people come to know;
do not sigh so, not ever

When you think of me you may weep aloud, but never grieve so openly that people come to know of it, never.
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2604

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing One's Feelings Directly"
A woman admonishes her lover: even if he remembers her and weeps aloud, he must never grieve so openly that people learn of their affair. While caring for him, she expresses through a firm prohibition her fear that their love will become known to the world.
Whereas the two preceding poems are a woman's statements of her own heart, this poem takes the form of words addressed to her lover. The fear of watching eyes and gossip appears also in poem 2591 of this book and elsewhere, and links this poem to the love poems of Book Eleven of the Man'yoshu that tell of hidden love.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.

First line, "omoiidete": "remembering me." The line has one syllable too many and imagines the lover recalling her.
Second line, "ne ni wa naku tomo": "even if you weep aloud." "Ne ni naku" means to cry out loud, and "tomo" expresses a concessive hypothesis.
Third line, "ichishiroku": "plainly." It describes something conspicuous that catches people's eyes.
Fourth line, "hito no shirubeku": "so that people know." "Beku" is the continuative of "beshi," marking the degree to which it might happen.
Fifth line, "nagekasu na yume": "do not grieve, never." "Nagekasu" is "nageku" with the honorific "su," "na" is the prohibitive particle, and placing the adverb "yume" after it in inversion strengthens the warning.
