I would put on you and see,
so I longed to do;

all the day the rain came down

Wishing to dress you in a fine Korean robe and see you wear it, I spent the whole day longing for you, the day the rain fell.
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2682

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Feelings through Things"
Wishing to dress her lover in a fine Korean-style robe and see him in it, the speaker, a woman, spent a rainy day longing for him. She thinks of the lover kept away by rain and waits eagerly for the day she can dress him in the robe she has prepared.
This is one of the poems on rain. It shares with the preceding poem, 2681, the inversion that places rain in the last line and a kakarimusubi in which "zo" is answered by "shi." The preceding poem shows a woman going out to wait for a messenger and this one a woman staying indoors in longing, portraying from two sides the heart of a woman waiting on a rainy day.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.

First line, "karakoromo": a beautiful robe tailored in continental style. It suggests a garment prepared for the lover and opens the poem with a splendid word.
Second line, "kimi ni uchikise": "putting it on you." "Uchi" is a prefix added to verbs to set the rhythm.
Third line, "mimaku hori": "wishing to see." "Mimaku" is the nominalized form of "mimu," followed by the continuative form of the verb "horu."
Fourth line, "koi zo kurashishi": "I spent the day in longing." The particle "zo" is answered by "shi," the attributive form of the past auxiliary "ki," in a kakarimusubi.
Fifth line, "ame no furu hi o": "the day the rain fell." Placed after the fourth line in inverted order, it leaves the reason the lover could not come to the rain, with a lingering resonance.
