walled with clay, poor and humble,
the light rain falls down

come close to me now, my love

Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2683

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Feelings through Things"
A light rain seeps into a poor clay hut far away until even the bed is wet, and the speaker, a man, calls on his beloved to draw close. Rather than lamenting the shabby dwelling on a rainy night, he takes it as a reason to hold each other, a simple and warm scene of love.
This is one of the poems on rain. Whereas the two preceding poems were by women waiting for their lovers on rainy days, this is a man's poem about being with his beloved on a rainy night, contrasting the one who waits with one who is together. The first word "ochikata" may mean "far away," though some take it as a place name.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather love poems by people whose names have not come down to us.

First line, "ochikata no": "over there, far off." It suggests that the hut stands away from the village.
Second line, "hanyū no oya ni": "in a humble hut of clay," daubed with earth or with a bare earthen floor. It shows the poverty of the dwelling.
Third line, "kosame furi": "a light rain falls." Its continuative form flows on and leads to the result in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "toko sae nurenu": "even the bed is wet." The particle "sae" means "even," and the perfective "nu" closes a clause here.
Fifth line, "mi ni soe wagimo": "come close to me, my love." The imperative of "sou" is followed by the vocative noun "wagimo," ending the poem with tenderness.
