Book Eleven Love Poems Ancient and Modern I 2684
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Feelings through Things"
Telling others that he had no hat, the lover used the rain as a pretext to stay with her, and the woman fondly recalls the sight of him. In his staying on despite the eyes of others we glimpse the closeness of the pair and the woman's longing for those days.
Within the category "Expressing Feelings through Things," this belongs to a sequence of poems on rain. Rain poems run on from poems 2681 and 2682, and in the next poem a man wishes for rain as an excuse to stop at a woman's house. In treating rain as a pretext for meeting, the woman's memory here and the man's wish in the next poem form two sides of one conceit.
The author is unknown. The anonymous poems of Book Eleven gather the love poems of people whose names have not come down to us.
First line, "kasa nashi to": "saying there is no hat." The particle "to" marks what was said; it is the excuse for not going home in the rain.
Second line, "hito ni wa iite": "telling others," with "wa" singling out "others" and hinting that the true intention was something else.
Third line, "amatsutsumi": a noun for being kept indoors by rain; here it refers to staying on at the woman's house on account of the rain.
Fourth line, "tomarishi kimi ga": "you who stayed." "Shi" is the attributive form of the past auxiliary "ki," showing that the event is recalled as past.
Fifth line, "sugata shi omōyu": "your form comes to mind." "Shi" is an emphatic particle, and "omōyu" means to come to mind of itself, expressing a memory that rises unbidden.
