Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 2969
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet laments a lonely love: though the heart is tangled like an unstitched robe, no one even asks why. It speaks of the loneliness of having no one to confide in.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "tokikinu no," is a pillow word for "midaru," to be in disarray, since an unstitched robe falls into disorder.
Line two, "omoimidarete," means "my thoughts in tangles."
Line three, "kouredomo," means "though I long."
Line four, "nani no yue zo to," means "asking what the reason is."
Line five, "tou hito mo nashi," means "there is no one to ask," voicing the loneliness of a troubled heart.
