Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3012
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
Using the ripples on the rain-swept Furu River as an introduction, the poem sings of thinking of the beloved without pause. It shows the device of pivoting on "furu," to fall as rain, and the place name Furu.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "tonogumori," means "the sky clouded over."
Line two, "ame Furu kawa no," pivots on "furu," the rain falling, and the place name Furu, leading to the Furu River.
Line three, "sazarenami," means small rippling waves, and the lines up to here form an introduction leading to "ma naku," without pause.
Line four, "ma naku mo kimi wa," means "without pause, you."
Line five, "omōyuru kamo," means "come to mind." The next poem, 3013, also features the Furu River, and the two are placed side by side.
