Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3013
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet calls on the beloved not to forget him and vows that, like the unbroken flow of the Furu River, their bond will never end. Continuing the Furu River of the preceding poem, it pivots on "furu," waving sleeves, and the place name Furu.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "wagimoko ya," is an address, "O my darling."
Line two, "a o wasurasu na," means "do not forget me," and the poem pauses here.
Line three, "Isonokami," is a pillow word for "Furu." Poem 2997 in this book uses the same pillow word.
Line four, "sode Furu kawa no," pivots on "furu," to wave sleeves, and the place name Furu, featuring the Furu River after the preceding poem.
Line five, "taemu to omoe ya," is a rhetorical question, "would I think it could end? Never."
