Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3015
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
Using the white foam of a waterfall roaring like thunder as an introduction, a woman laments that her well-known lover has not appeared lately. The violent waterfall scene contrasts with the quiet loneliness of waiting.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "kami no goto," means "like thunder."
Line two, "kikoyuru taki no," means "of the roaring falls."
Line three, "shiranami no," means "of the white breaking waves," and the lines up to here form an introduction leading from what stands out clearly to "omo shiru."
Line four, "omo shiru kimi ga," means "you whose face I know well."
Line five, "mienu konogoro," means "these days you do not appear," ending on a noun.
